This research program will focus on the development of novel yet practically relevant input-output control schemes to control mechanical systems, including (but not exclusively) flexible robotic space manipulators and spacecraft. Input-output control schemes are those that rely on the qualitative properties feedback elements have. For instance, it is common to exploit the "passive'' input-output map mechanical systems often have; these systems neither create nor destroy energy. As such, provided the feedback compensator has a dissipative form, robust closed-loop control is assured. This is the basis of passivity-based control.
