The aggressive nature of cancer requires treatments that simultaneously deliver multiple blows to a tumour. Animal models of human cancers are used to understand the action of new anti-cancer treatments and assess their safety for use in human patients. However, the majority of studies using animal models rely on a limited number of measurements that typically only assess the treatment's effect on tumour growth. Other physiological parameters that can shed light on a treatment's effectiveness can usually only be measured upon sacrifice of the research animals. Armour Therapeutics Inc. is developing novel treatments for breast and prostate cancers that attack tumours through several different mechanisms. Armour is therefore in need of methods to evaluate each of these mechanisms in live animal models. This need can be met by biomedical imaging technologies that measure multiple biological parameters in intact tumours.
