Modular steel construction is an alternative construction method for steel structures where individual complete units are prefabricated in a factory and are assembled on site to produce permanent residential and commercial buildings. Modular steel construction has many advantages, such as providing a fast return of investment, has better quality control and is more environmentally friendly. The current application of modular steel construction in Canada mainly consists of structures not more than three-stories in height. To enable construction of mid-to high-rise buildings with this method, it is necessary to focus on their lateral load resistances under dynamic loading (i.e, wind and earthquakes). Although modular steel buildings are considerably different than the traditional steel counterparts, there are no specifications for them in Canadian design codes. With the design experience of the industry partner, and the expertise of University of Toronto's research team in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, the proposed research will focus on the design and dynamic behaviour of high rise modular steel structures. The results of this collaborative research have the potential to expand the Canadian construction market while safeguarding the environment.
