Power transmission networks are important infrastructures that require significant capital investment to deliver the power from the generators to the local utilities. Within these networks are transmission towers that have an extremely important role as they are used to support the overhead power lines. The failure of one or multiple power transmission towers in a power grid will result in the disruption of the distribution of the power to the consumer. A recent example is the collapse of two high-voltage power transmission towers in Surrey, British Columbia on 4 July 2011, which led to a major power outage. In such a situation, an efficient crisis/disaster management plan would require the restoration of the distribution of power in the shortest possible time. The Advanced Modular Tower by Tower Solutions Inc. offers a unique low-cost solution to restoring power quickly. The results of the proposed research will provide an improved understanding of the stability/strength and behaviour of the Advanced Modular Towers and will contribute to the design and construction of more efficient towers for emergency power restoration.
