Understanding the complex interaction between genes and environment during development is one of the most challenging problems facing scientists today. Any hopes of solving major societal problems, from cancer to biodiversity loss, all depend on acquiring a deep understanding of this complex interaction. Funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada has enabled my lab to successfully use the highly organized societies of ants as a model system to unravel how social, ecological, and hormonal environments affect the development and evolution of gene networks. The results emerging from my lab are changing the way scientists think about how the environment regulates and facilitates the evolution of gene networks.
