Inflammation is one of the ways that our body heals from injury or assault to the immune system. There are different cells in the human system that are responsible for directing the inflammatory response. A specific type of cell, termed a monocyte, is responsible for secreting small proteins called cytokines. Cytokines act as instant messengers of the immune system, alerting and sending other cells to the site of inflammation. These alerts can lead to inflammation; there are several specific cytokines that cause inflammation and there are also specific cytokines that stop inflammation. In order to prevent tissue damage by the inflammation, the inflammatory response needs to start and stop at the right time. In this study we will investigate how a particular cytokine, called interleukin-27 (IL-27), regulates inflammation using cells isolated from healthy people. By studying how IL- 27 regulates inflammation, we may be able to identify new targets for treatment of inflammatory disorders.
