Information from the natural environment reaches us through our senses and is decoded by the higher brain. Understanding the set of transformations by which incoming sensory stimuli are transformed into trains of action potentials and how these trains are decoded in the higher brain, the neural code, is a central problem in neuroscience. It has been observed across species that neurons in higher brain areas are more selective to incoming stimuli than neurons in peripheral areas.
