Tracking daily activities has numerous benefits. For example, in a hospital, locating equipment is vital for clinical interventions, but today can occupy upto 20% of medical personnel time, with significant costs to hospitals to compensate for untraceable or unauthorized movements of equipment. Other contexts, for example, have related needs for tracking the evacuations of personnel in a nuclear facility, factory or airport, or for planning navigation routes based on daily traffic patterns. Critical decisions are constantly being made based on data from monitored activity through sensor networks. These physically distributed sensors, generate vast amounts of data, only a small fraction of which is turned into knowledge.
