英文摘要
The TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator phase 2 (ISAC-II) is on the verge of delivering unprecedented intensities of the most exotic nuclei, those that exist in nature only for tens of milliseconds in the most violent stellar events, to a suite of some of the world's most sophisticated instruments for studying the physics of rare nuclei. The preparation and delivery techniques result in beams containing more than one species, that is, "cocktails" with both the exotic nucleus of interest, and ions with the same mass-to-charge ratio. For ISAC-II experiments to be most effective, a means of identifying the various components of the "cocktail" is needed. We propose a compact and relatively simple device called a Bragg detector. This device identifies the components of a cocktail beam by measuring how the beam loses energy in a gas volume. It will use digital signal waveform readouts to process the energy loss profile. Our device will be based on the design of one that was already built and operated successfully by one of the team members for experiments in Europe.
