This Northern Suppliment is required for a study of ageing in Canadian polar bears. Knowledge of the age structure is required to determine whether a population is reproductively healthy or not. Currently, ageing uses expensive mark-recapture techniques that necessarily involve anaesthesia and physical handling. I will investigate an alternative method of ageing polar bears, one that does not require handling.
