The public and the scientific community are increasingly interested in the environmental and public-health concerns associated with contaminants of emerging interest. Many wastewater treatment plants in Canada are planning to invest in upgrades to treatment infrastructure to respond to more stringent regulations and/or to protect the sources of water that are used to supply drinking water. The proposed research is thus in direct alignment with the research topic included under the NSERC Strategic target area of Environmental Science and Technologies, and more specifically, the research topic of c) Ensuring Secure Community Water Systems. The main objective of the proposed research is to recommend ways to design and operate wastewater treatment plants to remove contaminants of emerging concern so that there is minimal impact from the discharge of municipal wastewater into lakes, rivers and streams. This project combines the expertise of Viviane Yargeau
