英文摘要
To The public and the scientific community are increasingly interested in the environmental and public-health concerns associated with contaminants of emerging interest. Many wastewater treatment plants in Canada are planning to invest in upgrades to treatment infrastructure to respond to more stringent regulations aimed at improving wastewater quality and/or to protect the sources of water that are used to supply drinking water. This proposed project will ensure that investments in advanced treatment technologies have the added benefit of removing contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs); thereby, protecting the environment and providing safe and secure sources of drinking water. The objective of this collaborative R&D project is to improve the potential for using ozonation to disinfect different types of wastewater and to efficiently remove CECs from wastewater before discharge to receiving streams. Another project objective is to provide water treatment practitioners in Canadian municipalities with the information required to make scientifically sound decisions early in the process of installing additional treatment technologies in WWTPs. The collaborative project between the industry, McGill University and Trent University will build upon our collective expertise in ozonation, wastewater treatment, CECs removal and transformation and toxicity testing. This research will provide a) an improved understanding of removal and transformation of CECs in advanced treatment of WWTP effluents; b) advanced ozonation technologies for wastewater treatment; c) recommendations on ways to implement advanced oxidation technologies to mitigate the release and impacts of CECs; d) a new market for ozone gas, and e) training of HQP with a trans-disciplinary background. Our industrial partners will obtain valuable information that will allow them to further develop and test the technology in order to meet targeted disinfection and CECs removal levels. This project will allow them to take a leading position in that area of growing interest. Ensuring safe and secure water systems will benefit Canadian society by subsequent reduction of long term obvious health and environmental issues.
