Hybrid analytical microfluidic techniques

This grant involves the development of microfluidic based instruments. Microfluidics, the study of the use of small volumes, offers the potential for doing many analyses rapidly with miniscule amounts of reagents and samples, often with inexpensive disposable devices. Microfluidic studies are often referred to as Lab on a Chip or micro Total Analysis Systems (microTAS) with the goal of having a complete or near complete analysis system on a single small device. The proposal involves the use of centrifugal (spinning) microfluidic disks. These disks are portable and well suited to use in the field for environmental and medical tests. The research involves the development of completely new ways to get samples and chemicals onto the disks. In addition, the studies involve developing very new ways of building the disks and using them so that they can be used for more complex analyses than the present generation can handle.
