This objective of this research program is to improve the design of new concrete structures and to develop techniques for the evaluation and retrofit of deficient concrete infrastructure. The research will aid in the development of new approaches for the design of bridges to resist earthquakes. The research will also develop improved methods for analysing older bridges and buildings that have design or construction deficiencies. Aspects that will be studied include the performance of thick slabs without shear reinforcement, as well as the strengthening of thick slabs by adding shear reinforcement. Experimental and analytical studies will be carried out to examine deficiencies in regions of complex flow of stresses in structural elements in older buildings. Another objective is to develop behavioural models to predict the performance of parking garage slabs that have been subjected to concrete deterioration due to the use of de-icing salts.
