The objective of this research is to address fundamental research challenges in designing the next generation of smart systems that have integrated heath monitoring and self-healing capabilities along with the requirement to meet stringent performance requirements through command, control, and communication. Many complex engineering systems need to perform reliably and efficiently for extended periods of time without any interruption or degradation in their performance. Practical examples of such system are abundant. The applicant continues to be interested, and has a track record in application of his research to aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, autonomous space and underwater vehicles and structures, (nuclear) power and communication; chemical and allied process control industries; energy storage (batteries/fuel cells) and smart grids. All of these systems must perform uninterrupted and within the desired operating range for safety, economic, and environmental reasons. On the other hand, failure or non-performance due to aging are inevitable, thus, an automated ability to continuously monitor the health of the system; detect and rank the severity of faults, isolate, and accommodate for failures through self-healing is of utmost importance. The proposed research meets the needs of many Canadian industries, has a high potential for commercialization, and as importantly, will provide the Canadian industries with a supply of highly trained engineers.
