Following activation by bile salts, FXR regulates transcription of genes involved in the metabolism of bile salt and lipids in the liver. In some studies, FXR-/-mice exhibited compromised intestinal integrity at baseline, with further deterioration after bile duct ligation. We observe also that limited data underline FXR involvement in immunity and inflammation in the gut.
