Laser machining of ceramics with controlled microstructure

The long-term goal of this research is fabrication of shapes from ceramics through material removal by laser radiation or through joining of components by laser welding. Engineering ceramics possess mechanical and physical properties such as high thermal resistance, hardness and chemical stability, making them uniquely suitable to a number of industrial applications. However, being hard and brittle, ceramics are difficult to machine using conventional methods. Laser machining allows fabrication of microscale features in ceramics while providing benefits of a non-contact technique.
