Lignocellulosic biomass have many challenges as feedstock for bioproducts and bioenergy production. If it were to be used for direct energy and thermochemical conversion, it must be in a form which is easy to use and efficient to transport. If it were to be used as feedstock for biochemical conversion, the lignocellulosic matrix has to be easily broken down into components. Thus, this research program will look at different pretreatment options, densification and characterization of biomass from agricultural crop residues. Pretreatment of agricultural biomass is necessary for densification. The pretreated biomass is then subjected to densification, because densified forms are less costly to transport. This research program will also look into the ease of breakdown of pretreated lignocellulosic biomass densified forms for use in biochemical conversion.
