The overarching goal of this research work is to convert municipal solid waste (MSW) into refuse derived fuel
(RDF) pellets, which has the potential to be used as feedstock for the biofuel industry and provides an
alternative means for disposal of garbage, which is currently disposed in landfills. Therefore, the objective of
this project is to characterize the RDF fluff obtained from Waste Management Services of the City of
Edmonton (partner). Sorting of the RDF fluff will be performed to control the composition of final products.
The different components of RDF fluff will be pelletized to obtain different products which may be suitable for
biochemical and/or thermochemical conversion. The end product will be in pellet or briquette form, and it will
be of acceptable quality as feedstock for biofuel or bioenergy. The Waste Management Services, City of
Edmonton has been actively engaged in recycling and reuse of MSW for energy and other products. This
project will contribute to their effort and provide a means of collaboration in the future between the principal
investigator and the City of Edmonton.
