Presently, internal combustion engines are transforming towards clean and efficient operations, including using renewable fuels. The lowering of the flame temperature is crucial to suppress the nitrogen oxides (NOx) formation that reduces the reliance on the exhaust gas after-treatment. However, the combustion process becomes less stable, and the ignition more difficult to control. This work intends to discovery the temperature criteria of the ignition and the NOx formation under elevated cylinder compression, when using a homogeneous cylinder charge that is lean and diluted with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), including using conventional and renewable fuels. This research is primarily an empirical investigation, although with the modeling analyses and advanced controls. With the leading-edge platforms in testing, diagnosis and control that are established, in part, by the previous industrial and governmental support, the research seeks to obtain improved understandings on the fuel mixing and ignition, to identify the criteria of NOx formation, the charge ignitability and flammability, and the fuel delivery and property suitability.
