Short pulse laser radiation can be used to ionize atoms / molecules as well as excite specific atomic/molecular states. For longer laser pulses (duration of many optical cycles) the process depends basically on the wavelength, polarization and intensity. For pulse duration as short as a few optical cycles, the carrier envelope phase (CEP) is an important parameter for such processes. The CEP is defined as the phase of the electric field at the peak with respect to the maximum of its pulse envelope.
