英文摘要
In 2008, natural catastrophes resulted in more than 220,000 fatalities with overall costs totalling nearly US$200 billion. The single most devastating event was the Sichuan Earthquake, which accounted for over 30 percent of the total natural catastrophe related fatalities, resulted in total losses of approximately US$85 billion and left 5 million people homeless. Extreme wind events have also led to significant losses. For example, wind related damages in the US alone were approximately US$40 billion in 2008. It is clearly recognized and generally mandated that structures be designed to protect against loss of life and property.
