The proposed research program is an investigation of the aerodynamics of higher solidity vertical axis wind turbines. Solidity is the ratio of the total blade area to the turbine swept area, and higher solidities can be used to lower turbine rotational speeds, reducing noise and potentially reducing vibration. However, these higher solidities lead to more complex flows (including high angles of attack, dynamic stall with massive flow separation and blade-wake interactions) around the turbine blades and through the turbine. The proposed research is a combination of fundamental experimental study, computational modeling and the exploitation of the complex flows to improve turbine efficiencies by developing novel asymmetric blade profiles and blade tip winglets. There are four main objectives:
