Obesity has become a worldwide epidemic, with physical inactivity contributing to approximately two million deaths a year. There are growing concerns over the increasingly sedentary lifestyle of many industrialized societies, as it is a major underlying cause of disease, disability, and death. There has been a dramatic rise in the prevalence of type II diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers, with problems like depression, anxiety and mental illness on the rise. In addition to the many adverse health consequences, obesity also has a corresponding social stigma that only exacerbates problems. These health consequences not only affect individuals, they also put pressure on health care systems. Regular physical activity is critical to everyone's physical and psychological health, regardless of his or her weight. An active lifestyle reduces risk of disease and makes the body stronger, fitter, and more flexible. Despite the many positive physical and psychological effects, many people still fail to meet recommended levels of moderate physical activity. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable, devoting more time to video games and other sedentary entertainment than any other activity. These activities are often addictive and self-reinforcing, making the desire to lead a more active lifestyle difficult, a fact compounded by economic, psychological, and social challenges.
