A Smart Parking System (SPS) allowing the drivers to get information on parking occupancies on site or online
beforehand is envisioned. The SPS system to be developed presents an efficient and green approach (reducing
carbon dioxide) for parking vehicles in a various scenarios. An automated parking space occupancy system that
is low cost for deployment needs to be examined. The project proposed here will examine computer vision
techniques for parking lot space occupancy detection and determine the feasibility of a system under general
deployment conditions. The automated system will allow for a Smart Cities approach facilitating parking
information to drivers who often looking for spaces and spending a lot of time and generating significant
emissions while doing so. With reduced time to parking, a reduction in emissions is the logical outcome. The
automated tracking of parking spot vacancies will facilitate such an outcome.
