Humanity's well-being ultimately depends upon ecosystems and their provision of innumerable benefits ('ecosystem services'), including the production of fish and shellfish for harvest, the mitigation of coastal erosion and climate change, and the contribution to recreational experiences, aesthetic enjoyment, and cultural identity. Despite this fundamental reliance, human use of and impacts on ecosystems continue to outstrip their productive capacity and their ability to withstand and recover from change. In this research, my research group will address three critical gaps.
