Prepared in conjunction with our Industrial Partner: This project is directed toward improved characterization of the charge-induced processes limiting the lifetime of organic materials used in organic electronic devices. In all organic electronic devices, charge induced molecular degradation is a pathway for device failure. Repeated charging cycles degrade the organic layer, necessitating replacement. Modern surface-science microscopy permits observation of individual molecules of the relevant organic materials, while subjected to positive or negative charging. The proposed research will identify the resulting changes in composition experimentally, and provide a detailed theoretical basis for their understanding and control. Our proposed research will touch all areas within the emerging industry of organic electronics that is innovating to commercialize devices such as for example, organic solar cells, organic light emitting diodes, and organic field-effect transistors, to name some. In each of these applications electro-active molecules such as those focused on in this study are encountered.
