英文摘要
The fast introduction of new access technologies in recent years has forced most service providers to run multiple access networks. The new architecture of heterogeneous networks can bring new opportunities to service providers to improve wireless network quality of service, create different revenue-generating options, and increase service flexibility. However, there are many challenges in deploying applications and services over an inter-technology roaming environment, especially for real-time VoIP streaming and high-speed multimedia streaming. Special provisions for streaming control and resource allocation are required. In collaboration with Bell Canada, we will investigate into joint rate adaptation and data buffering for voice and multimedia streaming applications in heterogeneous wireless networks. The joint consideration of rate adaptation and data buffering will allow optimal utilization of the available network resources and provide optimal application and service experience for the end users. We will study the dynamic interaction between these two approaches in future-generation heterogeneous wireless networks. In-depth understanding of their interaction will further enable the design of adaptive and jointly optimized service and application strategies. Through mathematical analysis, computer simulation, and system experimentation, we will generate practical guidelines on how to design and operate future wireless streaming systems, to optimally balance the tradeoff between service performance and networking cost. Thus, the outcomes of the proposed research are expected to benefit both our industry partner and the Canadian information and communication industry at large, by promoting technical methods and standard policies that lead to service improvement, cost reduction, and long-term competitiveness.
