The proposed project relates to the development of value-added bioactive compounds from the brown seaweed A. nodosum using various industrial biotechnology processes. The activities planned will lead to the development of novel processes that allow for the use of the seaweed in its totality for the development of value added products, specifically plant growth stimulators and soil amendments, as well as CO2 as an input for a land-based algal production system. The potential for technological impacts from this project are high as new industrial biotechnology processes will be developed from a novel biomass feedstock (seaweed). Potential for significant economic benefits to Acadian Seaplants with the development of new products, expansion of markets, increased profitability, job creation and increased production productivity. The potential for environmental impact is high as use of the seaweed by-product will reduce waste.
