Point of Load (POL) power supplies are used extensively in handheld devices, such as tablet computers, smart phones, as well as computer and data center motherboards. In handheld devices, POL is used to convert the battery voltage (normally around 3.7V) to power the digital IC (at around 1V) and to power the LED display screen (at around 3 to 5V). Several POLs will be needed in one handheld device. In computer and data center motherboards, the POL is used to converter the DC voltage of 12V to CPU, RAM, communication port, hard driver, etc. Integrated POL can significantly reduce the board area of POL and therefore, reduce the overall size of these devices. With the exponential growth in this area, the market for integrated POL will also expand significantly.
