One of the central themes in the study of architectural geometry is the impact that purely geometrical properties have on the design and fabrication of surfaces and solids. In recent years, curvature, and how it is dealt with, has emerged as being central to the effective transition from digital model to real object. However, curvature is a property that depends solely on the inherent geometry of the surface; it is completely insensitive to how a surface might physically perform under the usual sets of loading and boundary conditions. Yet it has often been noted that there is a distinct analogy between how physical forces flow through surfaces (i.e. their stress lines) and their curvature lines.
