Messier-Bugatti-Dowty, a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of landing gear systems, and Prof. Alis Ekmekci from University of Toronto are initiating a research partnership to investigate the flow in the region between landing-gear wheels and its connection to noise generation. Noise generated by aircraft blights many who live close to both airports and large flight corridors. As a result of the strong public response to this issue, noise policies became increasingly stringent over the years, putting the aviation industry under pressure to develop strategies to mitigate noise. Due to their bluff nature and position on the aircraft, landing gear systems in particular are identified as a large source of noise during the approach and landing phase of a flight. Noise generated by landing gear is a direct result of the fluctuating flow developing around landing gear and its interactions with the surfaces of the aircraft components. Nevertheless, the basic mechanisms of noise generation in these systems are still not well understood.
