Virtualization is the foundation for an agile infrastructure that offers many benefits for cloud computing and Data Centers. It provides flexible migration, applications isolation, high availability and resource allocation and management. It decouples the applications activities from the underlying network hardware through the concept of virtual machines (VMs). Once virtualized, the underlying physical network is used only for packet forwarding, and the applications of different VMs do not affect each other. However, the workload of the VMs might vacillate due to growth of certain applications or variation in the resources' demands. This might generate hotspots that downgrade the quality of service (QoS) of the applications and might affect the SLAs with the customers. Virtualization provides live VM migration as a solution for these hotspots.
