Assessing microbial risk during drinking water treatment: Linking pilot studies to plant performance

In January 2012, Health Canada released its review on the health risks associated with "Enteric Protozoa: Giardia and Cryptosporidium" in drinking water. A key component of this is Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA). Enteric protozoa are specifically of concern when maintaining microbial drinking water quality and subsequently in QMRA models, because chlorination has low/no inactivation effect on them (e.g. Cryptosporidium). The partner, the City of Ottawa, is proactive in its drinking water treatment practices and has worked with Health Canada in developing frameworks for integration of QMRA into drinking water treatment decision-making. They are interested in obtaining critical data so that they can better utilize QMRA to manage treatment operations and minimize public health risk from disease causing organisms. Specifically,
