This proposal is for the co-development of a cell-culture bioreactor by Tang's BIONANO lab at University of Waterloo and its industrial partner, CellScale Biomaterials Testing. The goal is to modify CellScale's existing product, MechanoCulture, and interface the modified devices with external electronics to make comprehensive bioreactors capable of electrical stimulation and perfusion during cell culture, in addition to mechanical exercise. Such bioreactors are highly sought after by researchers in the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine fields, but not yet commercially available. This project is the first joint R&D effort between the Tang lab and CellScale. The two parties will work together to design, fabricate, and test the modified MechanoCulture systems. At the project end, the new design and operation parameters will be validated in the Tang lab and transferred to CellScale for commercialization. Plus, the Tang lab will continue to use the developed devices to carry out cutting edge tissue engineering projects.
