Concrete cracking due to temperature change is a widespread problem in structures including base restrained walls. This type of cracks usually occurs in structures with rigidly interconnected parts which are cast after the concrete in their foundations have hardened, such as liquid containing structures. The difference in deformations between the wall and the foundation will cause shrinkage cracking. Cracking in reinforced concrete structures reduces the structure's integrity, cause deterioration and serviceability problems. Therefore, the structure should be designed in a way to prevent the cracks to occur especially for liquid retaining structures. Although it has been proven that it is almost impossible to completely eliminate the cracking, providing an adequate amount of reinforcement will reduce the crack width to an appropriate level. Design guides recommend reinforcement ratio limits to provide in order to control the crack width but their guidelines are very general and consider very limited factors. This study investigates the behavior of base restrained reinforced concrete (RC) walls reinforced with fiber reinforced polymers subjected to temperature change and shrinkage cracking. The finite element modeling will be used in this investigation. Based on the results of the study, the amount and percentage of reinforcement to satisfy the cracking limits will be recommended for inclusion into the building codes.
