The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of transforming the standard ISO (International Standard Organization) shipping container into a containerized WWTP (Waste Water Treatment Plant) and WTP (Water Treatment Plant) unit. Containerized WWTP and WTP are commonly employed in remote communities, work camps and any facility without access to major municipal infrastructures. Despite the satisfactory performance, they are dealing with issues such as very high cost of manufacturing, limited capacity, transportation, accessibility and site preparations. An alternative idea is to employ the standard ISO shipping containers as WWTP and WTP. An ISO shipping container is a box shape steel structure specially designed for transporting goods and products. The standard container is 20ft long and has a cross section of approximately 8ft×8ft (height × width), internal volume of 32m3 and carries a maximum gross weight of 30×103kg. Compared to the current containerized WWTP products, ISO shipping containers offer many advantages such as significantly lower cost, accessibility and easy transportation, low site preparation costs and considerably higher capacity (due to vertical configuration).
