EcoSynthetix Inc., a Canadian company, has developed a unique starch-based nanoparticle made from renewable resources called EcoSphere. It has worldwide commercial use as a binder where it partially replaces conventional binders made from non-renewable petroleum-based polymers due to its advantageous properties compared to traditional starch polymers. Recently, a modified version of EcoSphere (ECP) has been developed to enable its copolymerization with other materials. This new ECP particle allows for the modification and tailoring of its properties to meet specific needs, which could potentially lead to significant alternative market opportunities. Used as a seed polymer, the ability for ECP to incorporate different monomers in order to impart specific properties would enable their use in a wide range of applications.
