In power systems, ceramic insulators have gradually been replaced with composite insulators, which are light weight and less susceptible to breakage or vandalism than their ceramic counterparts. Composite insulators are often comprised of high consistency rubber (HCR) silicone elastomer, and silicone composites have outperformed other polymer based composites. However, processing operations of HCR-filler composites are labour intensive, requiring operators for material preparation and handling. In addition, the role of fillers is significant as composite developers must carefully balance material properties, processing, and economic considerations. Recently, there is keen interest in adopting liquid silicone rubber (LSR) for composite electrical insulators. LSR processing technologies are derived from low capital cost plastic injection moulding, where the process is highly autonomous and cycle times are shorter in comparison to those used in HCR processing.
