As a musician learning a piece of music, imagine being able to take a musical recording and selectively mute certain instruments or all instruments except for a desired one for playback to aid you in your practice sessions. The goal of this research project is to allow for this selective muting of instruments on any general recorded song, partially with the aid of having the musical score for the instruments of interest on hand. This form of muting from a recording is known as instrument separation in the context of signal separation from a mixture of recorded signals and our goal is to develop appropriate adaptive time-frequency filters and signal source separation techniques to be able to accomplish this separation task. The end result would be a score-informed mono (or stereo) instrument separation that will allow for musicians to practice along by mimicking a single instrument or to accompany the rest of the song by suppression an individual instrument to allow for "music
