Titanium Beta-C is a titanium alloy that is now widely used in the landing gear industry for spring applications which have traditionally relied on steel, yet it is a relatively new alloy with properties that have yet to be fully explored. The superior weight and corrosion resistance advantages of Beta-C Titanium ultimately led to its replacement of steel as the material of choice for the majority of landing gear spring designs. Recently there have been a number of issues related to quality and performance of Beta-C Titanium springs which have prompted Messier-Dowty (M-D) to take a closer look at these components in order to understand the reasons behind those issues and work on rectifying them.
