It is the intent of this proposal to use a new technique, discovered and developed in the applicant's laboratory, symmetric peak component XPS analysis, to determine the interactions between the two metals in a bimetallic alloy nanoparticle. Such alloy nanoparticles often function better as catalysts, sensors, etc., than single-metal nanoparticles but the interactions leading to this improvement are not understood. We intend to study platinium-ruthenium and platinium-molybdenum alloys, which have been found to function better than pure platinium, in direct methanol fuel cells, a candidate replacement for petroleum.
