The development of sensitive methods to monitor infrastructure health and to gauge environmental risk is becoming a global priority. The ability to assess and potentially detect structural deformation or impairment prior to catastrophic failure, requires local and global real time monitoring of critical installations including communication cables, pipelines and other large infrastructures. To achieve this goal, it is critical to develop local and global dynamic and static monitoring methods with long sensing length and high spatial resolution that incorporate simultaneous multiple parameter measurements. Such monitoring methods which are currently unable to meet these requirements represent the frontiers of distributed sensing research. The development of techniques aimed at revolutionizing civil structural safety and at improving the quality of material processing, design and developing the high speed (>40Gb/s) communication fibers and systems, and optical data storage is the focus of my overall research program.
