B-S chemistry: investigating the Thioboration reaction

The aim of our research program is divided into two major sections: (i) the development of new compounds to be used for the borylation reaction (addition of E-B bonds to organic fragments, where E = hydrogen, boron, sulfur, selenium, tin, etc) and (ii) the development of biologically-active boron and metal compounds. Without question, the most significant impact I can make in research at an undergraduate institution involves the training of HQP, whereby establishing a safe, fun, and productive laboratory where students come to experience chemical research. This proposal deals with making and study new compounds containing a B-S bond, where the boron group is derived from synthetically useful boronate esters. Reactivity of B-S compounds will be investigated with a number of organic substrates with, and without, the use of transition metal catalysts and microwave mediated conditions. All new compounds will be tested for potential antifungal properties as we search to develop new biologically active boron compounds.
