Major resource support for the particle physics group at the Université de Montréal

The infrastructure program of the Particle Physics Group (GPP) at the Université de Montréal maintains facilities supporting the research program of researchers from University of Montreal, Saint-Mary's University, Laurentian University, University of Guelph, University of Regina and TRIUMF. The research program involves 11 grant applicant and co-applicants from these universities and TRIUMF. The resource facilities consist of an electronics laboratory, a machine shop, a semiconductor test bench, a clean room, direct access to proton and neutron beams delivered by the Tandem accelerator of the R.J.A. Lévesque Laboratory. These state-of-the-art, world-class facilities, regrouped in the resource, provide the support for construction and R&D for detectors, readout electronics, trigger, data acquisition and detector neutron and proton beams testing. It also provides a computing support. The various technical and professional resources are organized as a support unit: The Groupe Technologique (GT) that is supported by a MRS grant, the University of Montreal and industrial contracts. The resource is also used by researchers from other universities within and outside Canada, worldwide. The resource, not standard in the field and not common in Canadian universities, provides formidable tools for the training of HQP (Postdoctoral Fellows, PhD and MSc students). The applicant and co-applicants are active in major experiments at CERN (ALPHA, ATLAS and ATLAS upgrades at sLHC, MEDIPIX), SNOLAB (PICASSO, EXO, HALO, SNO+), TRIUMF (TIGRESS, GRIFFIN, DESCANT). Examples of users of the resource from other universities within and outside Canada are: EBEX (McGill), ILC (Carleton, Aachen-Germany, Cornell-US, CEA Saclay, Berkeley, MPI Munich), AGATA (CNRS Orsay), STAR-STRIPES (Berkeley, Richmond), TACTIC (TRIUMF ,York-UK), Medical physics-Liquid Xenon PET prototype (UBC, TRIUMF), COBRA (Freiburg, Prague), MEDIPIX space project (ESA, Houston, Prague), industry within and outside Canada (ANS-New Brunswick, KPK38-Zurich, HYDRO-QUEBEC). Theorists from GPP/Montreal participate in the MRS program through phenomenological studies at LHC energies.
