We propose research on hollow optical waveguides, and will study their utility for new optical detection strategies in lab-on-chip (LOC) systems and as optical interconnections within electronic computing systems. The proposal builds on recent work in our lab, which produced new strategies for the fabrication of on-chip air-core waveguides. In these waveguides, light is confined to an air channel surrounded by omni-directionally reflecting claddings. Omni-directional confinement enables unique functionality, including novel geometries for sensing and lasing devices, and novel strategies for chip-scale spectral detection and spectrometry. We aim to extend this research as follows:
