Conductive polymers are man-made organic materials that are electrically conductive without addition of any metal or inorganic substances such as carbon blacks. They are increasingly studied for applications at the interface of biological system and external electrical units. For example, they are coated at the surface of neural implants to reduce neural scar without interrupting electrical communication. Conductive polymers can also be constructed into biosensors to detect biomolecules or the change of environment. In view of the increasing importance of bioelectronics in medicine, conductive polymers have the potential to play bigger roles in future.
