We propose to explore the processing and design challenges facing next-generation star trackers. These spacecraft sensors take pictures of the sky, compare them to a star map, and use this information to determine the satellites' orientation to a very high degree of accuracy. Star tracking is the only attitude sensing technology that permits high resolution attitude measurement, and complete (i.e three-axis) orientation measurement from a single device. These sensors have been used for decades, but there is increasing interest in enhancing their operational capabilities and affordability.
