There has been a profound shift in the field of gene regulation over the last decade, with non-coding RNAs emerging as important mediators of cellular processes in all groups of organisms (bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes). In bacteria, small RNAs (sRNAs) have been implicated in the control of everything from outer membrane protein biogenesis and quorum sensing, to iron starvation and sugar metabolism.
