This proposal is a continuation of a previously funded research program aimed at providing evidence that the stomach-derived hormone ghrelin targets brain regions important for the display of motivated behaviors. In addition, this proposal discusses experiments that will elucidate the potential mechanisms underlying the effects of ghrelin on reward circuits, and the potential role of brain derived ghrelin acting on the VTA to produce motivated behaviors. The results from the proposed studies will lead to a better understanding of the neurobiological effects of ghrelin on goal seeking behaviors, and behaviors associated with addictive substances like cocaine.
